Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Land Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFCWildfires in Utah and Colorado (7/1/2002)

With its largest wildfire on record (the Hayman Fire) still not fully contained, Colorado (right) continues to be plagued with other forest fires throughout the state, including the Missionary Ridge Fire north of Durango in the southwest, and the Spring Creek Fire several hundred miles to its north. In Utah (left), the Rattle Complex has burned more than 40,000 acres and a new fire has sprung up due west of the larger one. The Hayman Fire is about 90 percent contained, and has dropped below MODIS. fire detection threshold, but the large dark burn scar is quite apparent. In the false-color image, vegetation is green and burned areas are reddish-brown. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 6/30/02. Data End Date: 6/30/02.
